RENO NEWS - November 2010
Prevent Your Pipes From Freezing
Frozen pipes may be easier to avoid than you think! Prevention is key, and there is still something you can do to protect your home against expensive pipe repairs. With our winters getting colder every year, keep your home warm and cozy with these simple and inexpensive tips:
-
Insulate Pipes
- Check to see what pipes in your home are exposed in areas such as crawlspace, basements, attics, and outside walls.
- Clean your pipes of any excess dirt.
- Insulate pipes with fiberglass or foam. There are a number of options available in your hardware store that provide appropriate insulation specifically for pipes.
- Ensure that everything is sealed. Be careful to cover the pipes entirely and seal with duct tape in corners and ends.
-
Caulking
- Caulk outdoor pipes where they enter your home. A local hardware store will be able to advise what is best.
-
Shut Off & Drain Faucets
- Ensure water supply is turned off and then drain all remaining water from outdoor faucets. For example, a garden hose will often have water that will creep up and cause a pipe to freeze over. Be sure to disconnect these and store them indoors. Ensure that all pool, sprinkler and outdoor plumbing has been drained and shut off.
